An Exclusive Interview with Tirtha Man Sthapit

No one has ever imagined that a wood powder could be brought into use again but it’s the creative idea of Tirtha Man Sthapit who brought a mixture of wood powder to create "Emboss Art". He makes use of wood powder and some adhesives; and his deft, calculative hands to create landscapes of scenic nature, Himalayas, temples, stupas, chaityas and many more.

Born on 2011 B.S in New road, Mr. Sthapit always wanted to do something different and something new. With this enthusiasm, now, he has gained the fame of an artist.

Here, we have a small conversation with the creative artist, Tirtha Man Sthapit.

1. How did you get the idea to create these marvelous arts?

- It all started when I found the carpenter filling the cervices on the staircase of my house at Nayabazar. The carpenter had used wood powder and some adhesives and I observed it for several days. After some days, the idea to create art works with wood powder inspired me to create something new.

2. When did you start to create these arts?

- Now I'm 51 years old but the idea stroked at the age of 44 but after some research and devotion, I implemented my idea into a reality of 'Emboss Art' in 2058 B.S but it came into the limelight and in the knowledge of people and media, only in 2060 B.S

3. Have you got any training?

- No, not at all. It's God gifted and my devotion and effort.

4. Have you participated in any exhibition?

- I have participated in 36th National Art & Craft Exhibition 2062 and I bagged the special NAFA Award there.

5. What are the challenges you face while creating these arts?

- The craft itself is very challenging. It not only demands imagination, but also great patience and perseverance. There is also some problem in giving the most appropriate color to the art piece.

6. Are you satisfied with your work

- "Human wants are unlimited and they are never satisfied". I will be satisfied if only I could earn name and fame together.

7. Are you engaged with any organization?

- Yes, I am a member of Commercial Artists Association of Nepal.

8. Besides emboss art, what are you interested in?

- I am interested in playing chess that’s why I am a member of Chetanshil Samaj, besides chess I enjoy being alone with nature.

9. Do you work alone or is there someone supporting you?

- As the saying goes, "in every successful man there is a hand of a woman", is true for me as I am greatly helped and supported by my wife Mrs. Rup Shova Sthapit as she gives mixture of wood into a fine finishing set.

10. What are your future plans?

Through all these years I have learnt that promotion is extremely important to make our art and skills known to others. My future plan holds solo-art exhibition and want to show my creations to the mass.

11. Last word:

I believe that there is no need to search for the new talents in our country but we often fail to give them their due recognition for their skill and effort. My efforts would be duly rewarded if my emboss art could promote Nepal at the international level.
