Muttiah Muralitharan creates history

Muttiah Muralitharan has created history by capturing Pragyan Ojha's wicket, the last wicket in the second innings of the Galle Test, his 800th in Tests - the first bowler to accomplish the feat in 133 years of Test cricket.

In the first innings of the Galle Test, Muralitharan had become the first ever bowler to bag 100 wickets against India.  His superb feat of 105 wickets at 32.61 runs apiece in 22 Tests against India is unlikely to be surpassed as no other bowler, presently playing, has claimed even 40 Test wickets against India.

With his scintillating feat, Muralitharan has become the second bowler after Shane Warne in Test annals to take 100 wickets against three opponents - England, South Africa and India.  Warne had achieved the distinction against England, South Africa and New Zealand.

Muralitharan enjoys an excellent bowling record at Galle International Stadium, claiming 111 wickets (ave.18.50) in 15 Tests.

Apart from his feat at Galle, Muralitharan has captured 100 wickets or more at two other Sri Lankan venues - 166 (ave.20.69) in 24 Tests at Colombo, SSC and 117 (ave.16.02) in 16 Tests at Kandy.  No other bowler has managed to take 100 wickets atn a single venue.

Before his retirement, Muralitharan has extended his world record of capturing five wickets in an innings 67 times.

The Mahela Jayawardene-Muralitharan pair with 77 wickets has extended their world record - the best ever tally by a fielder-bowler combination in Tests.

It would be interesting to have a comparison of two greatest spinners in the history of Test Cricket.
