Know About Deepak Bista ?

by DUKSANGH SHERPA

"Success never comes alone", such is the story of Taekwondo Gold Medallist Deepak Bista. Born in a remote village in the Far Western Region, Deepak's parents were completely against any form of sports, contrary to where his own interests lay.

He started by playing volleyball, but soon realised the limitations of group games so shifted to individual sports where he found his love - Taekwondo. After receiving no support or any encouragement from his parents, he stole Rs 300 from his uncle to get admitted to Dhangadi Dojang.

His first success was just two months after the training when he won a gold in the regional games. He was just a yellow belt holder who defeated a black belt holder. This took him to the National games, where he again won a gold medal.

To sharpen his skills, he came to Kathmandu, lying to his parents that he wanted to study. He joined the central Dojang at Dasrath Stadium and hasn't looked back since. He's never lost in formal combat within Nepal. Deepak is the second Nepali athlete to have qualified for the Olympics.

As a big match gets closer, his training gets more rigorous and he suffers through sleepless nights, thinking about different strategies. He fears losing the skills that have made him his name.

Despite his particular diet, strict routine and harsh training, Deepak enjoys indulging in other things every once in a while. He loves to travel and just recently came back from a road trip to Everest base camp. He enjoys romantic and patriotic songs and loves watching Tom 'n Jerry. His idea of fun is to be around friends and family singing and dancing.

Deepak gives a reluctant answer when asked about retirement. Even with some health problems, he has made Taekwando and the grueling training sessions associated with it a part of his life for more than 15 years now.

After retirement
he wants to be involved with sports in one or the other way by being a coach, sports coordinator or whatever it takes.

Lastly, he wants to thank everyone for the love, support and encouragement they have given him.
