Nepal becomes a federal democratic republic
The historic first meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) confirmed the country a federal democratic republic on Wednesday.
The much-anticipated meeting held after a nearly ten-and-a-half-hour delay at the Birendra International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital Wednesday night took the decision, effectively ending the 240-year-old institution of monarchy and making the king an ordinary citizen.
Home Minister Krishana Prasad Sitaula, on behalf of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, tabled the proposal as per the Article 159 of the Interim Constitution for the implementation of a federal democratic republic at the CA meeting.
Following the decision, the CA has been prorogued till June 5. The Government has announced 3 days public holiday for the its celebration.
Before this unidentified groups detonated two bombs outside the Birendra International Convention Centre (BICC) at New Baneshwor in the capital, where the much-anticipated meeting of the Constituent Assembly is taking place for the first time.
